With MXIE, users can configure their presence and view the presence of others, send instant messages, set call handling rules, access voice mail and fax mail, make and terminate calls, and bind their user appearance to a different phone. Functions are performed with simple mouse clicks. For example, a call is transfer to another user by dragging and dropping the call indication onto the target user’s name.

Presence is an indication of the current state of a user, such as available, busy, or in a meeting. Others throughout the enterprise may view this real-time presence and base their actions upon it. For example, an operator might route a call to an assistant if the person for whom the call is intended is busy or in a meeting.

Instant messaging within the enterprise is a powerful productivity tool that allows users to communicate using secure text messages (also called “Instant Messages”) in real time. Instant Messaging eliminates interruptions in workflow by enabling users to ask and answer questions from other co-workers on the fly. Users can also initiate chat sessions and chat-based conferences. In such an application, IM is used heavily for collaboration tasks, allowing comments to be silently sent between collaborators without disrupting on-going conversation. Additionally, a log of the IM session may be archived to clarify decisions made during a collaborative effort. MX Instant Messaging is Secure within the enterprise. Alternately, the administrator may elect to allow messaging using services external to the MX, such as AIM or Jabber.

With MXIE, the user is no longer tied to his desk. The Call Handling ability of MXIE promotes complete mobility for the user. The call handling rules editor of MXIE allows users to configure actions to be taken by the MX30 or MX250 on incoming and transferred calls. The rules editor is highly flexible, allowing call handling decisions to be based upon presence, date and time, day of week, or one or more specific calling party numbers. When applying the routing rule, MXIE can route calls to voice mail, a specific greeting within the user’s mailbox, another user, an auto attendant script, another MX system, or to a number outside the enterprise, such as a mobile phone.

Users can access voice mail from either their phone or MXIE. When using MXIE to retrieve messages, a voice mail message can be played on the PC speakers or through the user’s handset for increased privacy. While reviewing a message, it may be saved as new, archived to a folder, attached to an email, or forwarded to another user. Users may also add a text comment to any voice mail, for his future use or for the convenience of others to whom the message may be sent. MXIE can optionally be deployed with fax drivers, allowing users to access fax mail on their PC, print, copy, and forward to other users.

MXIE may be installed in a wide diversity of environments. MXIE is a client-based application that operates on Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista RedHat and SuSE Linux, or Mac OSx 10. This allows enterprises to use the right operating system for each employee or work function. For example, the enterprise may run on Windows as the norm, but the marketing department may use MAC products and applications for graphics creation. MXIE is a component of the MX30 or MX250 systems. As an embedded application to the MX platforms, it is specifically designed for users of these systems.
